After completing Tulsa Welding School’s pipefitting training program, graduates have the basic skills needed to work in a number of industries in a range of entry-level positions, including that of a boilermaker. In general, boilermakers create the components for boilers as well as install, repair, and re-pipe commercial steam and hot water boilers. These boilers are generally used in heating and hot water systems in commercial buildings and multi-family homes. Boilermakers have work year-round as boilers and their piping systems develop stress fractures, leaks, and corrosion. However, some work may be seasonal or project-based depending on the particular employer.

Skills of a Boilermaker

In order to assemble boilers and perform repairs, boilermakers must learn a variety of welding techniques, including Arc, MIG, TIG, and Pipeline welding. Different techniques require different equipment and are performed under different circumstances, all of which must be understood by the student. Boilermakers must know the standard language of the trade, including blueprints, pipe and fitting markings, metal color coding, isometric drawings, and pipe welding symbols. Boilermakers must also know pipefitting skills and techniques. Boilermaking can be thought of as a specialization of pipefitting to working more or less exclusively on boilers. Most of the skills learned in a pipefitting program will directly translate into those needed for performing boilermaking.

Major Responsibilities of a Boilermaker

Boilermakers are often required to inspect boilers, valves, fittings, tanks, and other system components to detect leaks, weaknesses, and defective sections so that they can be repaired. They must be able to clean, fabricate, repair, and replace the equipment and components of boiler systems. Cutting, shaping, and welding metal using various tools will be critical for assembling and repairing boilers as well as their piping systems. It may be necessary at times to use heavy machinery for metalworking, which may include brakes, rolls, and drill presses. Many of these tasks will require reading blueprints and understanding common terminology of the trade to ensure proper procedures are being followed in the installation and maintenance of these systems.

As a vocational school, Welding School specializes in training students in certain areas of the technical fields. Its pipefitter and boilermaker training program gives students the skills they need to perform the work required of those and related fields.
