What Are Military Education Benefits?

In return for your service to America, you and your family could qualify for military education benefits. We explain what those are below. Please reach out to an Educational Service Officer (ESO) or counselor within the Military Service for your specific eligibility status.

GI Bill®

The GI Bill® is funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs to help service members and veterans cover tuition and other costs related to going to trade school. There are multiple programs under the GI Bill®. Eligibility requirements and funding amounts vary across programsii

Tuition Assistance

Military tuition assistance may be used to pay for:

  • Vocational programs
  • Technical programs
  • Undergraduate programs
  • Graduate programs
  • Independent study
  • Distance-learning programs

Tuition assistance is designed to cover tuition, plus course-specific fees such as a lab fee or online course fee. Tuition assistance DOES NOT PAY FOR:

  • Books and course materials
  • Flight training fees
  • Repeating a course
  • Continuing education units (CEUs)

If planning on using Military Tuition Assistance, you must have received TA Approval from an Educational Service Officer (ESO) or counselor within your military Service prior to enrolling into a program. This is reflected through Service providing a TA Voucher from the appropriate branch of service.

Each branch of the military has its own applications, procedures, and expectations. You’ll need to apply via your base education office, your command support staff where applicable, or your branch of service’s online portal.
