Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration is a growing field.i To meet the need for qualified technicians, many organizations offer scholarships to help students fund their HVAC/R training.ii

TWS HVAC/R Scholarship Requirements:

  • An HVAC/R scholarship cannot be applied toward tuition and fees until you have met all normal admissions requirements and received a training start date.
  • Placement in a class or shift is dependent on availability. If you are placed in and apply your scholarship to one shift or program, you can’t transfer it to another one.

Scholarships for HVAC/R Students

  • Nexstar Legacy Foundation Scholarships ($2,500 - $5,000)

    The Nexstar Legacy Foundation was founded in 2005. Its mission is to attract talented individuals to the heating, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical industries by spreading awareness about the stability, earning potential and prestige of careers in these fields. Nexstar created the Explore the Trades program to offer information about these careers and scholarships and training grants.

    What is it?

    • Two Nexstar Legacy Foundation scholarships are available to eligible HVAC/R students:
      1. Pat Langlin Brazil Women in the Trades Scholarship
        • A $5,000 scholarship for female students currently enrolled or planning to enroll in plumbing, HVAC or electrical training programs. A total of two scholarships are available.
      2. Diversity in Plumbing and HVAC Scholarship
        • A $2,500 scholarship for students who historically have been underrepresented in the plumbing, heating and air conditioning industries. This group includes African-American students, female students, Hispanic/Latino students, Asian students, indigenous/Native American students, and multi-racial/ethnic students. Applicants must also show financial need.

    When is it?

    • The window of time to apply for the Pat Langlin Brazil Women in the Trades Scholarship and the Diversity in Plumbing and HVAC Scholarship is April 15, 2019 to August 1, 2019 at 11:59 PM EST time zone.iii
    • Winners will be selected based on character, financial need, level of academic achievement, leadership and demonstrated commitment to furthering the plumbing, HVAC and electrical industries.
    • The selection committee will notify applicants of whether or not they won the scholarship before September 1, 2019.iv

    Who can apply?

    1. Pat Langlin Brazil Women in the Trades Scholarship
      • Female students currently enrolled or planning to enroll in plumbing, HVAC or electrical training programs.
    2. Diversity in Plumbing and HVAC Scholarship
      • Students who traditionally have been underrepresented in plumbing, heating and air conditioning industries and who demonstrate financial need.
    3.  Students who have received a Nexstar Legacy Foundation scholarship in the past aren’t eligible for future awards.iii
    4. The scholarship is not meant to subsidize training expenses for students participating in employer-sponsored programs.iv

    What is it?

    • Scholarships for those who competed in the SkillsUSA Championships in the HVAC/R category and won an official award.

    When is it?

    • Finalists in the SkillsUSA Championships in the HVAC/R category may claim their scholarship award after the competition.
    • The 55th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships will be held on June 24-28, 2019 in Louisville, KY. Click here for details.

    • Individuals who competed in the SkillsUSA Championships contest in the HVAC/R category and won an official award.vii

    How to apply?

    • Winners of the SkillsUSA Championships contest in the HVAC/R category may claim their award by completing and submitting an award acceptance form through the Rees portal.viii
  • Hilmor Retool Your Future Scholarship Contest ($5,000)

    What is it?

    • Scholarships for those who competed in the SkillsUSA Championships in the HVAC/R category and won an official award.

    When is it?

    • Finalists in the SkillsUSA Championships in the HVAC/R category may claim their scholarship award after the competition.

  • The ThermaXX Jackets 2019-2020 Scholarship ($1,000)

    Since 1986, ThermaXX Jackets has been providing specialized removable and reusable insulation jackets to clients in a wide range of industries. Yale University, Mount Sinai and Spirit Aero are just some of its clients.xvii

    In an effort to advance its technology and continue to innovate its products, ThermaXX LLC strives to make education more affordable for future members and leaders of the industry. To help achieve this goal, the company offers scholarships to students training for HVAC/R careers.

    What is it?

    • A one-time scholarship for $1,000 for students pursuing training and careers in the field of HVAC/R.xviii

    When is it?

    • The deadline for the ThermaXX Jackets Scholarship is December 1, 2019xix.

    Who can apply?

    • Students in HVAC/R training with a GPA of at least 2.5.

    How to apply?

    • Fill out the application form online here. An essay of a maximum of 250 words explaining what inspired you to become an HVAC/R professional is required.
    • The winner will receive an email, and their names will be announced on the scholarship submission page.
  • PlumbersStock.com Student Scholarship Contest ($500 - $2,000)

    Providing plumbing supplies for more than 20 years, PlumbersStock.com offers top-quality plumbing, HVAC and irrigation parts and brands at wholesale prices to customers around the globe. The company not only provides the products but also the prices, knowledge and support that is typically exclusive to contractors and service professionals.xx To show support and give back to the community, PlumbersStock.com offers scholarships for trade school students preparing to become HVAC technicians, plumbers or irrigation and sprinkler specialists.

    What is it?

    • A “how-to-guide” video competition with a total of $3,000 in scholarship prizes. The winner receives $2,000 and two runners-up are awarded $500.

    When is it?

    • The deadline for the PlumbersStock.com Scholarship is March 31, 2019. If you enter your video after that date, your submission will be considered for the next scholarship opportunity.

    Who can apply?

    • Create a “how-to-guide” video for home improvement newbies. An example subject would be “How to Replace a Toilet.”
    • Publish your video on a free video hosting site, such as YouTube or Vimeo.
    • Endorse your video with information about its topic, the school you’d like to attend, what the PlumbersStock.com scholarship is and a link to www.PlumbersStock.com.

Rees Scholarship Foundation

The Clifford H. “Ted” Rees, Jr. Scholarship Foundation was created to support the competency and recruitment of future HVAC/R technicians. The foundation advances this goal by awarding scholarships to eligible students of institutionally accredited heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration programs. Since 2003, the Rees Scholarship Foundation has awarded about $440,000 to over 250 students. Scholarships of up to $2,000 each are awarded through the foundation each year to HVAC/R students. Winners also receive a free ICE test through Rees’ partnership with North American Technical Excellence (NATE).v

  • HVAC/R and Water Heating Technician Scholarship Program ($2,000 Maximum)

    What is it?

    • The HVAC/R and Water Heating Technician program is a scholarship for students enrolled in HVAC/R training programs at institutionally accredited schools.

    When is it?

    • Applications for the HVAC/R and Water Heating Technician program scholarship are accepted all year. There are two review deadlines:
      • Fall Semester Application Deadline: June 1
      • Spring Semester Application Deadline: October 1

    Who can apply?

    • HVAC/R students attending an institutionally accredited trade school.vi

    How to apply?

    • Apply online. Complete the application form, including a 500-word essay, questions about your background and two letters of recommendation.

    What is it?

    • The Donald L Frendberg Program provides scholarships for HVAC/R students enrolled in institutionally accredited trade schools in Florida.

    When is it?

    • Applications for the Donald L Frendberg Scholarship Program are accepted all year. There are two review deadlines:
      • Fall Semester Application Deadline: June 1
      • Spring Semester Application Deadline: October 1

    Who can apply?

    • HVAC/R students attending institutionally accredited Florida trade schools.

    How to apply?

    • You can apply online. The online application requires you to fill out information about your background, write a 500-word essay and include two letters of recommendation.

The Plumbing, Heating, Cooling Contractors (PHCC) National Auxiliary Scholarships

The PHCC Auxiliary is a community of the PHCC Association. It is a national group of men and women working together to promote and advance the goals of the PHCC Association through communication, cooperation and educationxii. Educational initiatives include:

  • Fundraising
  • Producing educational materials
  • Holding events to spread awareness about careers in the plumbing, heating and cooling industry
  • Distributing scholarships and grants for students in PHC trainingxiii

  • 2019 National Auxiliary General Scholarship

    What is it?

    • A scholarship for students pursuing training for careers in plumbing, heating and cooling. In a typical year, more than 20 individual scholarships are awarded, totaling more than $25,000xiv.

    When is it?

    • The deadline for applications for the 2019 National Auxiliary General Scholarship is
      June 15, 2019, for classes starting the following fallxv.

    Who can apply?

    • High school seniors planning on attending a plumbing or HVAC training program
      and full-time students who are already enrolled in such programs.
    • A National Auxiliary member must recommend you in order to qualify for the scholarship.

    What is it?

    • A scholarship of $500 or more for employees of PHCC National Association members who are pursuing training for careers in plumbing, heating or cooling.

    When is it?

    • The deadline for the National Auxiliary Bradford White Industry Scholarship application is June 15, 2019.

    Who can apply?

    • Employees of PHCC National Association members. Employers must be paid members of the PHCC for a period of two years, including the current year.
    • Applicants must provide proof of enrollment in an accredited plumbing, heating or cooling program that is registered with the Department of Labor.
    • The scholarship award must be applied for the following fall semester or upcoming spring semester.
