The Electrical Applications program, available at the Jacksonville, Florida campus only, contains seven (7) phase term courses and 27.0 semester credit hours. The objective of our electrician training program is to train and prepare students for entry-level or trainee positions in the residential, commercial, and industrial electrical industry. Students who complete these electrician courses will have an understanding of mechanical and electrical principles, residential and commercial wiring applications, voice, video, and data cabling systems, the application of motors, lighting, and devices that control them and exposure to various types of transformers. Upon successful completion of this electrician program, students will receive a Diploma.

Fundamentals of Electricity

This course provides students with a basic understanding of electricity. Instructors will teach schematic wiring, test meter usage and safety processes for handling electrical systems. Students will work with dual voltage systems commonly found in HVAC/R equipment and learn about control circuit wiring and high voltage wiring.

Fundamentals of Solar

Students will learn the concepts and processes of photovoltaic systems, including their design and installation, through lectures and hands-on lab exercises. This course also teaches solar energy systems’ conceptual, mechanical and electrical design, as well as wiring and electrical issues that can arise.

Electrical Wiring – Residential

This course uses the most current version of the National Electrical Code Book as a guide while instructing students on the basics of residential wiring, electrical safety and personal protective equipment. In this course, students will wire a scaled-down three-bedroom home. Students will also learn how to safely place all wiring, circuits, switches, receptacles, lighting fixtures and GFCI devices in the trainer according to the electrical code.

Electrical Wiring – Commercial

This course is a deeper dive into the National Electrical Code book. Students will learn about load calculations, blueprint reading, cost estimation, three-phase motor wiring and conduit manipulation. Students will also wire a commercial building with lighting in accordance with the applicable codes.

Emerging Electrical Applications

This course takes students’ understanding of electrical wiring to the next level, with instruction on conduit bending and voice, data and video cabling systems. It also refines their skills in calculating load requirements for branch and feeder circuits.

Emerging Applications also teaches these essential electrical skills:

  • The proper selection of pull boxes and junction boxes
  • Conductor selection and calculations
  • Conductor installations
  • Applications necessary for conductor terminations and splices
  • Calculating load requirements for branch and feeder circuits

Motors and Lighting Practices

Students will learn how electricity functions in motors, lighting and the devices that control them. This course also covers the characteristics of light, the proper way to install various types of lighting (incandescent, fluorescent, high-intensity discharge, LED) and controls used in their operation.

This course also teaches the differences between DC and AC motors, single-phase and three-phase applications, calculating the proper sizing of motors, the selection of motor controllers and overload protection.

Electrical Distribution Systems

This course is an additional in-depth exercise in the National Electrical Code book. Students will apply their knowledge of the NEC for calculating transformer sizes, understanding overcurrent protection, describing the various types of fuses and circuit breakers in the industry and selecting the proper size for specific applications. This module also describes the purpose, construction and maintenance of switchgear.
