Women in Welding: Consider Choosing Welding School
Welding is a skill used in many different fields. HVAC technicians need welding skills. Welding is an essential part of private and industrial construction projects. Welders work in such specialties as iron working, shipbuilding and bridge construction. Welding skills are critical to diesel mechanics and boilermakers. Welding is used for both creation of new projects and repair of existing systems, such as plumbing or heating and air conditioning systems.
Why Should Women Consider Welding School?
Welding skills are required in a variety of industries ranging from large scale construction projects to small electronics. There are a variety of career paths a welder can take in the course of her lifetime. For example, the shipping industry uses welders in all aspects of the business. Welders may be found in shipbuilding teams, ship repair teams, rail working teams and more. Freight travels on trucks, and the trucking industry also requires welders. Boilermakers may work on ships, in apartment buildings, or in factories. New construction requires plumbing, pipe fitting and boiler work. Bridges are in constant need of repair and maintenance. Welders also work in factories assembling automobiles, as well as in auto and motorcycle repair shops.
What do Students Learn in Welding School?
In a welding technology program, students learn various types of welding, welding terminology, welding principles and the science of welding metallurgy. Other skills that welders need are math skills and the ability to read blueprints proficiently. After training is complete, a candidate must apply for certification through the American Welding Society before being able to work as a welder.
The welding industry has always been primarily male, although women started to enter the field during WWII, as made famous by "Rosie the Riveter". A welding career is a good choice for a woman who enjoys mechanical things and working with her hands rather than sitting behind a desk all day. Welders must be certified and continually keep up to date with new techniques, so those women interested in lifelong learning may also be interested in welding. While welding can be physically challenging, it can also be extremely rewarding because a welder can look at a finished project and know that her skills helped bring it to fruition.
