Welding Education for Armed Forces Veterans - Pros and Cons

If you're an armed forces veteran and you're looking at your opportunities after your service is over you should consider perusing the education necessary to get started in the welding industry.

Welding is a field that is constantly growing and changing. A career in welding can be a great choice for many individuals, but it is important to understand the field, training requirements, and types of jobs that are available before making your decision.

Variety of Welding Experiences

Pros: There are a wide variety of welding jobs available in a variety of locations. This makes it easier to find work in your area after you completed your service in the armed forces. Welders may be teachers or work in laboratories. It’s common for welders to work on construction sites for buildings, bridges, and other constructions. Welders can also find employment on or under the sea for oil rigs and other construction and maintenance needs. Whatever your interest and skills, you are sure to find a job that you enjoy.

Cons: Since there are a variety of possible jobs available for welders it helps to have experience in a wide variety of areas. If you want to be fully available to all the job opportunities you will have to get experience and education in a variety of different situations.

Welder Income

Pros: Experienced welders can make a good income after gaining experience in the field. Welders in some environments, such as oil rigs, can easily make much more.

Cons: Welders' salaries vary widely based on the type of job and, most importantly, the level of experience and education of the welder.

Work Environment

Pros: Because the welding field is so diversified, it continues to grow and welders are in high demand. Welding is important to building, technology, and science so the need for welding is only likely to grow in the coming years. It is also possible to get a job working for manufacturers who assist the armed forces still overseas. Training schools and financial aid are also increasingly available to those who are interested in getting an education in the welding field.

Cons: Because of the wide variety of opportunity out there some welders work in challenging or dangerous environments. Working at high heights or under the seas obviously carries with it some dangers. The good news is that welders can choose among a variety of careers and decide on their own work environment. Training in welding techniques also increases the safety of welders at work.

There are many opportunities for training and employment for armed forces veterans who choose to pursue welding as a career. Salary increases can be expected as welders gain experience and training.
