Tungsten Inert Gas Welding is a Highly Precise and Important Skill to Learn

High Frequency TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding is a very important welding method. There are a number of reasons that this method is valuable, but the most important is because it provides very high quality welds. This is not the only reason TIG welding is so important, though. A big reason for the prominence of TIG welding is that it made it able to weld non-ferrous materials. Early on it was not possible to weld non-ferrous materials. This limited welding to ferrous metals such as iron and steel. TIG welding opened up the possibility to weld metals such as aluminum or magnesium.

TIG welding is able to provide these results through its use of a small intense arc and inert gas as a shielding agent. Additionally, the electrode is not consumed during the process, which is different from many other welding procedures. Since the electrode is not consumed, filler material must be fed in separately by hand.

Complications of TIG Welding

The fact that filler material must be fed in with a free hand is one of a few reasons why TIG welding is one of the more difficult welding methods. Another reason can be blamed on the small arc that is used. Since the arc is so small, great care has to be taken to assure that the electrode does not contact the workpiece. Additionally, striking the arc can be tricky. It is possible to strike the arc with a high frequency generator, but this method can be damaging to some vehicle electrical systems. It is also possible to strike the arc in a similar manner to striking the arc for stick welding. The problem with the "scratch start" method is that it can contaminate the electrode or the weld.
